When you first think of the Playstation 3, you’re probably thinking about various games, or the people who play those games, or maybe even the diehard gamers that camped out in lines to get them when they first came out. While games and gamers are fun and all, wouldn’t it be cool if there was something that you could do with your PS3 that might actually contribute to something important?

Enter Folding@home, a distributed computing project where your PS3 and thousands of others contribute calculations for ongoing research involving “protein folding, misfolding and related diseases.”

The project has been running for several years now and includes PC’s for the calculating power, but the stats for the power of the PS3’s is impressive.
