We get hummingbirds at our feeders every once in a while…but last week we had some rain that seemed to bring them out in droves. Four were at the feeder in the back yard, and another three were at the feeder in the front yard, and they were all dive bombing each other and fighting over who got to get the feeder first. I grabbed my camera and tripod and got a few shots of them when they landed for a rest. They’re almost impossible to track while they’re flying!
I’ve always been fascinated by these little guys. They’re like little elves in bird suits.
It’s amazing how fast they can fly, and how much control they have while hovering.
This one rests on one of those swirly wind-things.
It looks like this is the female Rufous Hummingbird. That’s the closest match I could find from the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds (Western Region). Great book if you’re interested in bird identification.
