Well whaddya know? I actually finished a new piece of artwork! Will wonders never cease. This one is called “Angel of Death”. I’ve always been intrigued by that name, since it’s sort of a “juxtaposition of the incongruous” and I’m fascinated by such things. The term “Angel” is usually a positive, uplifting, light kind of word, whereas “Death” is about as opposite as you can get.
So this is my idea of what the Angel of Death might look like. It feels great to finally have a new piece done, and I am starting to think about what the next one will be. I have foolishly made a New Years resolution that I will finish 10 new images this year. (!) That’s a lot considering how busy my job keeps me, especially in the summer/fall, but I’m determined to goof off less, and make more art.

Wow! I came across your site while googling images of Angels of death for new ideas and inspiration to draw my own figures. The tiny google thumbnail of your work grabbed my eye. From there your blog drew me in and then your gallery and before I knew it I was crawling all over your website soaking up every facinating image and factoid.
I love the imagry and the down to earth yet dreaming way you’ve approched your medium and subjects. I’m not blowing smoke here. What touched me right away about your angel was the humanity in Death, the compassion expressed and backed up my the little descriptive blurb at the bottom of the gallery pic. I’m also a stickler when it comes to drawing wings.
If you don’t mind the constructive critisism, I’m relieved you gave them so much more attention and worked on giving each feather individuality. The only thing that’s off is the leading edge of the wing from the top of the ‘wrist’ down that looks like it’s covered in small covert feathers much farther down than would be on a real wing. Since I read how you strive for realism I thought I might point that out. Otherwise everything else, from the baby’s proportions to the shape of the hands are wonderfully done.
I have a friend going to the acadamy of art institute in San fransisco who’s hoping to learn how to do what you do and get a job very much like yours some day. She’s met some very interesting people in the industry, like Jim Byrne who helped pioneer some lighting techniques in CG I’m told. Since you specialize in lighting, I plan on directing her to your blog and artwork. Hopefully, she can learn some tips from your tutorials.
