This is the time of year when people that live around large areas of dry acreage start to get nervous. “Dry Lightning” has been a real problem this summer, and the West has had record numbers of brush fires.
We’ve had a few in our area, and a few nights back had one in the foothills of the Ruby Mountains, which can be seen from the back of our house. I grabbed a tripod and my camera, and got some time exposures of the fire. In this shot, the fire engines and rescue vehicles in the foreground work to get everything under control, while more lightning strikes in the mountains.
It’s a creepy feeling watching brush fires burn away so close to your house. We’ve got a good fire department though, including a lot of volunteer fire fighters, and they usually get them under control pretty fast. More strikes after the fire is pretty well under control:
We’ve got some rain coming, so hopefully we’ll be seeing less of this soon.

Not too long ago I shot some time-lapse sequences of the clouds over the mountains from my house. I’ve put the sequences (saved as flash movies) on the tutorial section on my gallery site.
These were a lot of fun to shoot and put together. I had to keep the dogs and children away from the tripod as the camera fired off it’s magical sequences. The “click…….click…….click…….” sound was quite fascinating to the rugrats, who on at least one occasion tried to figure out what was going on by staring into the camera lens, which as you might imagine makes for a less than optimal photograph.
Hope ya like them…check them out here.

Last October my wife and I vacationed in Oregon, and visited the Classical Chinese Garden in Portland. It’s a really beautiful garden area located between NW 2nd and 3rd and NW Flanders and Glisan in Old Town/Chinatown.
You can get information about the garden here.
The gardens also have a teahouse, with all kinds of teas and snacks. Since snacks are an important part of my life, I found this to be a good thing.
I took some photos mainly of the architecture and flowers. You can see them at my gallery site, here.

The skies can get awfully clear out here in the sticks, and a couple of weeks ago we had a full moon. And as everyone knows, clear night sky + full moon = Bust Out the Telephoto!
This shot was made with my Canon 20D and the beast-like Sigma 50-500mm lens. It was of course racked all the way out to 500mm, on a tripod, and shot with the mirror locked up to help avoid vibration.
It’s cropped to 100% here, and got a little contrast increase and sharpening in Photoshop.
Fun stuff!

I’ve been building my own systems for quite a few years now (actually, the thought occurs to me as I write this that the last computer I bought was my Amiga back in 1988 or so…ever since then I’ve built all my PC’s).
I recently built a new system and decided to photograph the entire process as a sort of tutorial for those that may be curious about the process. This new system uses the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU, the ASUS P5B Deluxe motherboard, 4 gigs of RAM and Windows XP Pro 64-bit.

It’s in the tutorials section of my gallery site…check it out here.

I took this picture today waiting for my kid’s school bus. It was actually almost warmish…could it be that Spring is actually around the corner?

Hey, one can hope, right? The stores are starting to get in bags of soil, mulch, and all that good gardening stuff. I see more trees being planted in my near future.

I’ve been really busy at work, but managed to head over to the L.A. zoo a few weeks ago to test out a new lens for my Canon 20D. It’s the Sigma 50-500 tele zoom, and it’s quite a beast.
I’m really happy with it so far. Despite it’s size and weight, it lets me zoom in on things that I simply couldn’t have shot before with such tight framing. When I move back to the country next month, I plan on doing a lot more nature photography, so I wanted to get a long lens for animal shots and telephoto scenics.
The photos have been posted at my art site cybergooch.com.
